    Beatriz Marcet Champagne
    Dr Beatriz Marcet Champagne (United States/Argentina) is Executive Director at the InterAmerican Heart Foundation, an organisation that has made important contributions to research, tobacco control, risk factor prevention, and cardiovascular emergency care in Latin America and the Caribbean. The IAHF has developed advocacy networks in the region, including a network of young people to focus on the three main risk factors. Her organisation has managed the CARMELA Study, a public-private research project to identify risk factors for CVD in seven Latin American cities. Her areas of expertise include: Advocacy in tobacco control; CVD prevention; Nutrition/diet, obesity and physical activity, ecological/policy approaches; Youth issues - she is involved in the InterAmerican Health Youth Network; Workplace prevention - particularly smoke-free workplaces.


    Jorge A. H. Ramirez
    Dr. Jorge A. H. Ramirez is a medical doctor and economist and specializes in Epidemiology at the School of Public Health. He studied at the University of London in Public Health, Health Economics and Planning (London School of Tropical Medicine, London School of Economics). Jorge has a Ph.D. in Ethnohistory at the National School of Anthropology and History of Medicine. He is a senior lecturer at the Faculty of Medicine at the National Autonomous University of Mexico and of Anthropology of Health at the National School of Anthropology and History in Mexico. Jorge is the director of the Project on Prevention of Chronic Diseases for the Inter-American Heart Foundation. He is also the principal investigator of the CIH Project for the Oxford Health Alliance.


    Maria Teresa Fernandez Ramos
    Dr. Maria Teresa Fernandez Ramos is a dental surgeon by the Faculty of Dentistry at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), with MA of Hospital Services at the Mexico City Autonomous University. She is the ex-Head of Health services at the municipality of Tlalpan and lecturer in Social Odontology at UNAM. She holds graduate diplomas in Epidemiology, Health Services Management and Odontopediatrics. She has wide experiences in Health Services Administration and intervention projects in community health in Xochimilco and Tlalpan. She is a Co-Principal Investigator of the CIH project with the Oxford Health Alliance.


    Oscar René Benavides Cárabes
    Physical anthropologist Oscar Rene Benavides Carabes is a native of the state of Oaxaca in the South of Mexico. He is a graduate of the National School of Anthropology and History in Physical Anthropology. He was also a member of the seminars on Population and Behavior of the National Institute of Anthropology and History of the Seminar on Social vulnerability to disasters of the Project on the effects of climatic oscillation Southeast Pacific El Niño of the Center for Research and Higher Studies in Social Anthropology (CIESAS) working in the area of health research in Mexico and its history. He is a Research Associate for the CIH Project of the Oxford Health Alliance.

    Beatriz Marcet Champagne
    Dra. Beatriz Marcet Champagne (Estados Unidos / Argentina) es Directora Ejecutiva de la Fundación Interamericana del Corazón(FIC), una organización que ha hecho importantes contribuciones a la investigación, el control del tabaco, prevención de factores de riesgo para las enfermedades cardiovasculares, crónico-degenerativas en general y atención cardiovascular de emergencia en América Latina y el Caribe. La FIC ha desarrollado redes de promoción en la región, incluida una de jóvenes cuyo trabajo se centra en los tres principales factores de riesgo para las enfermedades crónico- degenerativas. Su organización ha gestionado el estudio CARMELA, una colaboración público-privada de proyectos de investigación para identificar factores de riesgo para enfermedades cardiovasculares en siete ciudades de América Latina. Las áreas de especialización de la Dra. Champagne incluyen: Promoción en la lucha contra el tabaco; Prevención de las enfermedades cardiovasculares; Nutrición / dieta, obesidad y actividad física, enfoques ecológicos y de política al respecto; Cuestiones relacionadas con la juventud - que está involucrada con la Red Interamericana de Jóvenes por la Salud; Prevención en lugares de Trabajo – enfocados principalmente en lograr lugares de trabajo libres de humo de tabaco.

    Dr. Jorge A. RamÌrez H. es un mèdico y economista y especializado en EpidemiologÌa en la Escuela de Salud Pùblica de Mèxico. Èl estudio por doctorado en la Universidad de Londres (Escuela de Medicina Tropical, Escuela de EconomÌa), en Salud Pùblica, EconomÌa y Planificacion en salud. Jorge tiene un doctorado en Etnohistoria de la Escuela Nacional de AntropologÌa e Historia, Mèxico. Èl es un profesor de la Facultad de Medicina de la Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mèxico y en AntropologÌa de la Salud en la Escuela Nacional de Antropologia e Historia de Mèxico. Jorge es el director del Proyecto de Prevencion de Enfermedades Cronicas para la Fundacion Interamericana del Corazon. Tambien, es el investigador principal en Mèxico del Proyecto CIH de Oxford Health Alliance.


    Dra. María Teresa Fernández Ramos
    Dra. Marìa Teresa Fernandez Ramos es un cirujano dentista por la Facultad de Odontologìa de la Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mèxico (UNAM); con Maestrìa en Administracion de Servicios Hospitalarios en la Universidad Autonoma de la Ciudad de Mèxico. Tiene diplomados de posgrado en Epidemiologìa, Gerencia de Servicios de Salud y Odontopediatrìa. Tiene mucha experiencia en Epidemiologìa Social, en Administracion de Servicios de Salud y en proyectos de intervencion en salud comunitaria en Xochimilco y Tlalpan. Ella es una Co-Investigadora principal del proyecto CIH de Oxford Health Alliance.

    Antropologo Fìsico Oscar Renè Benavides Carabes es un oriundo del estado de Oaxaca. Es un egresado de la Escuela Nacional de Antropologìa e Historia en la licenciatura de Antropologìa Fìsica. Tambien, fue miembro de los seminarios de Poblacion y Comportamiento del Instituto Nacional de Antropologìa, y del Seminario sobre Vulnerabilidad Social en desastres del Proyecto sobre los efectos de la oscilacion climatica del Sureste del Pacìfico El Niño del Centro de Investigacion y Estudios Superiores en Antropologìa Social (CIESAS) colaborando en el area de investigacion sobre la Salud en Mèxico y su historia. Èl es un Investigador Asociado del Proyecto CIH de Oxford Health Alliance.

    Community Coalition Building: an Intervention Workshop was organised by the local Mexico CIH Team and took place on 26-28 February 2009. It brought together over 40 participants from the community including young people, teachers and healthcare professionals. They discussed the 3 risk factors within their community and shared ideas on strategies to tackle them, including the interventions to be implemented.

  • Schools


    Surveys were conducted in 40 schools both the control and intervention areas of the city. Children who participated were between the ages of 12-14 years and completed the questionnaires using mini laptops, as well as having basic biometric measurements (e.g. height, weight).
