The Skygarden is a design to create a network of both public and private, wild and cultivated rooftop gardens throughout New York City. Modular units to access these rooftop gardens are comprised of a stair system wrapping around a series of stacked porches. These access stairs are designed for placement into a standard sidewalk pavement block, where they will serve as both a symbol and an entry to the green roofs. The Skygarden stair also features canopies that collect rainwater for irrigating rooftop gardens or plantings at the ground level. The Skygarden is conceived to provide cities with the social and environmental benefits of green roofs: additional wildlife habitats, filtration of runoff water and air, insulation for buildings, and an environment for outdoor social activity.
