- The Diabetes Leadership Forum Africa 2010

The Forum is a two-day event to be held in Johannesburg, South Africa, on 30 September and 1 October. It offers a unique opportunity for governments, donors, policy planners and public health experts to address the double disease burden of communicable and non-communicable diseases. The event is set to gather more than 150 participants to discuss ambitions, priorities and actions for change in diabetes and NCDs within sub-Saharan Africa.
- Nominations and Registration Open for 2010 International Health Promotion Awards Symposium

The inaugural URAC/GKEN International Health Promotion Awards Symposium, which recognizes and promotes innovative programs that can significantly improve health around the world, will be held in Rome, Italy on December 6-7, 2010. We are now accepting nominations in two categories: International Community Health Awards and International Workplace Health Awards. Twelve (12) finalists (six from each category) will receive a complimentary trip to Rome to present their programs at the Symposium. - Global Children’s Challenge 2010

In an extension to the Global Corporate Challenge (a walking challenge for employees), this year a Global Children’s Challenge [link to the doc] will be taking place from 22 September for 8 to 12-year-olds. There is also a website here.
- Philips Because
A Philips initiative designed to generate practical, achievable ideas for improving the health and well-being of people living in cities. Three Award grants totalling €125,000 are on the line to help translate these ideas into reality.
- Active Ageing Seminar
The Vida Network announces their first Active Ageing Seminar in London, UK.
All fitness, health and care professionals working to promote health,
wellbeing and independence amongst older people will want to attend this
exciting event which is being delivered in partnership with ICAA
(International Council on Active Aging) and the BHFNC (British Heart

- Submit a nomination for the 2010 Awards for Excellence in Inter-American Public Health
Nominations are being accepted online now at http://www.pahef.org/awards/nominations for the 2010 Awards for Excellence in Inter-American Public Health, a joint program of the Pan American Health and Education Foundation (PAHEF) and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO). These awards honor dedicated professionals who led the way in advancing health conditions in the Americas during the last century and are intended to stimulate the growth of the next and rising generation of leaders working to improve health and health care in the Americas.
- China Health Focus: News from the China International Center for Chronic Disease Prevention

The China International Center for Chronic Disease Prevention was launched in Beijing in November 2009 and promises to provide health solutions to the chronic disease challenge facing China. This pdf is the first issue of the Center’s newsletter, ‘China Health Focus’. It highlights their flagship project, “China Rural Health Initiative” with a feature on “Improving Heart Health in Rural Tibet” (see p3), as well as the first Annual Beijing Forum on Chronic Disease.
- Louise Lown Heart Hero Award 2010

The Louise Lown Heart Hero Award is awarded by ProCOR in recognition of individuals’ and programmes’ innovative, preventive approaches to promoting cardiovascular health in low-resource settings. This is the call for applications for 2010, closing date 30 April.
- Evaluation of the Ramblers Family
Walking Programme

The Ramblers intervention entitled ‘Furness Families Walk4Life’ is a 12 week walking intervention, designed to encourage regular independent walking close to home as part of everyday life - not only health and leisure walks but everyday trips to the shops, school or work. The programme was delivered in partnership with Action for Children and piloted in 5 children's centres in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria. Barrow-in-Furness is one of the Department of Health's Spearhead PCT areas, with six wards among the lowest fifth in terms of health inequalities and deprivation in England. Overall, the project was successful at engaging young families, who reported positive experiences of the programme.
- Savvy Switching

This is a short pdf précis of a discussion entitled ‘Savvy switching: nudging consumers towards healthier choices’. The 20+ participants included representatives of NGOs, government, academics and the food industry.
- Burden of Disease Today

The 3rd Burden of Disease Today conference will be held in Johannesburg, South Africa, on 9 and 10 March, including a session on nutrition and CVD, and an Interactive workshop on ‘How to get people to make smart health choices’. For more information click here and for registration, click here.
- FDF Community Partnership Award Winners:
The FDF Community Partnership Awards, which celebrate some of the inspirational ways in which companies work within their communities, were this year presented by Jim Fitzpatrick MP, Minister of State for Food, Farming and Environment. The Awards are divided into five categories: Local Community; Culture, Media and Sport; Workplace; Education; and – new for this year – Environment, the Awards showcase the community-related projects being undertaken by companies across the food and drink sector.
- FDF Recipe for change:
Food companies have invested heavily over many years to change the recipes of some of Britain's biggest and best-loved brands so they are lower in salt – without making any compromises on taste, quality or safety. The UK food industry is now widely acknowledged to be leading the way on reformulation – the FDF Recipe for Change report highlights how companies of all sizes have been reducing the salt content of everyday products such as bread, breakfast cereals, cooking sauces, snacks and soups.
- Changing Diabetes: Barometer Seminar

Novo Nordisk developed a Changing Diabetes® Barometer, which constitutes a strong guidance for policy-makers and decision-makers to measure progress for changing diabetes and help set priorities for national diabetes action plans. The Changing Diabetes Barometer initiative aims to improve lives of people with diabetes and reduce costs caused by this progressive chronic disease. The initiative seeks to achieve these aims by inspiring the collection and sharing of important information on the size of the burden of diabetes, and the effectiveness of interventions to combat it. At its centre is a message to all involved in meeting the challenge of diabetes, a call to ‘measure, share and improve’. - CIH Project Team in Leicester

The environmental scan is an important component to the narrative of the CIH story. It provides a snapshot of the community environments in which people live and work at each of the country sites, thereby providing insight into the most appropriate strategies needed to initiate changes in the major risk factors (unhealthy diet, tobacco use and physical inactivity). This showcase, from Rebecca Willans at the Centre for Workplace Health, St Marys University College, is of a project to establish whether an employee can design, deliver and evaluate a workplace health programme, and how effective such programmes are at changing employee behaviour.

- Park(ing) Day
This event in San Francisco transformed metered parking spaces into temporary parks to educate the public about the value of green spaces in towns. It was brought to 3FOUR50's attention by Joy Kwong, a winner of the Fit City competition
- Weigh to Give, America!
This new campaign by the Foundation for Caregivers (Tim Griswold) is the 'first national weight-loss-a-thon'. Weight loss was chosen because there is a direct connection between excess weight and chronic illnesses (leading to increased demand for caregivers).

- Series on Oxford Health Alliance in MJA
Several articles in the Medical Journal of Australia of 3/17 December 2007 are about the Oxford Health Alliance and chronic disease prevention (see 'The World Today' section).
- Sociedad Latina initiative to decrease unhealthy storefront advertising
Youth community organisers from non-profit organisation Sociedad Latina hosted a hearing in Boston City Council chambers on the issue of advertising of harmful and unhealthy products in convenience stores. You can also read a news story about their work.

- Experience Food at Work

Uscreates is a UK consultancy to 'design social change', working in partnership with local authorities, businesses and others to improve lifestyle choices. This video is about the successful 'Experience Food at Work' project, in Breckland Council, to work with employees to improve eating behaviours in the workplace and diversify the range of foods eaten during the day.

- Break the Silence

Break the silence is a short film about diabetes seen from the perspectives of 25 IDF Youth Ambassadors. The film was shot during the IDF Diabetes Congress in Cape Town (Dec 2006) where the Youth Ambassadors were gathered for a workshop to create an action plan for how they as young people living with diabetes can support the UN resolution on diabetes and contribute to ensure the resolution is implemented in their home countries. - First Global Youth Meet on Health (GYM 2006), organized by HRIDAY SHAN

The first Global Youth Meet on Health (GYM 2006) was organized by HRIDAY SHAN [http://www.hriday-shan.org] from November 14 - 19, 2006 at New Delhi and Agra to disseminate innovative health educational strategies to youth and equip them for effectively undertaking informed health advocacy. It provided an interactive platform to 280 delegates from 35 countries and 11 Indian states to learn from eminent global health and development experts.
The Youth for Health (Y4H) [http://y4h.hriday-shan.org] movement was launched on a vibrant note at the closing ceremony of GYM 2006. It is working towards forming a global alliance of young health advocates, which can carry out concerted actions for promoting health policies. As a part of Y4H efforts, a signature campaign addressed to the Secretary General, UN focusing on Global Health Promotion for Youth has been initiated.
