Lagos State, the first among the 36 States in Nigeria has taken an initiative to fight chronic diseases. The initiative was flagged off with free diabetes and high blood pressure screening for all residents in ALL the local government areas in the State. For two weeks from end of July 2007, over 800 residents of the State in seven local governments were screened free of charge. The Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola (SAN) while flagging off the programme said that the move is part of the quest of the state government to concentrate on preventive healthcare rather than curative medicine. While speaking, the Commissioner of Health, Dr. Jide Idris said that the programme would be a continuous exercise.
