I am on my way home from a short visit to the World Economic Forum. The worlds leading corporations and their CEOs are here to discuss and be informed and make important choices for the sake of the environment, sustainable bio fuel, water supply refugees, conflicts, economy, hunger, over nutrition, AIDS and wellness at the workplace. You might think that it is somewhat of a circus. and it does look a bit like that CEOs are followed and guided into their huge bio-fueled and sustainable AUDIs, by small armies of corporate people making sure that they are not subjected to surprises and meet anyone that are not anticipated in the briefings. Thousands of security people watch the ground, while helicopters secure the airspace and the private jets are parked safely in the airport. Sometimes it resembles a war zone rather than a place where people exchange ideas. The money spend here are astonishing and the Swiss tourist board must love it. They may have invented the cookoo watch, but this must be its nest.
On my way up here I was reminded about how fantastic trains could be as means of transportation ,if only the Swiss authorities could be charged to run them ,showing that public services can be fantastic and on time. I hope that the CEOs could take some learning’s from that trains are good for the health and social interaction of us employees!
However, going to the workshop about wellness at the workplace gave me huge comfort. These corporate people get it! And they all look very fit for the job. Although most of them are men this mattered less because the chair was a woman…and what a woman!
The new CEO of PepsiCo Indra Nooyi not only says the right things she looks as if she means what she says and we believe her! In a funny way you would have wanted her to be a real politician so that you could have voted for her. “We need to address the environmental and the health problems in order for the social context of the societies to thrive” she said and I think even the serious Coca Cola people at my table agreed. A one hour workshop about how to get health programmes on the agenda and working inside corporations is not much. But these guys are smart and within a very short time we had several ideas and solutions and a suggestion to bring this to the big agenda in the WEF. They immediately understand the connection between the problems with the epidemic of chronic disease and the environmental issues and want to see action. Do not underestimate them, when they understand why and can see the importance they wants action and they can make a huge difference on health. So the good news they get it and are going to do something about it. I wish that so of the public employers had been there as well!
So going back my carbon foot print does not concern me, I am just happy to have a bio footprint.
Sounds promising!
